Emergency Contacts – Gary – 623-8361 Jim – 321-8898 The Story of the Poppy The Poppy was first chosen as the American Legion’s Memorial Flower in 1921 and was worn in memory of the men who lost their lives in World War I. The one bright color on the shell torn fields and hills of these war-torn areas was the little red poppy. On the edges of the trenches, in the ragged shell holes, brave little poppies grew and bloomed on the graves of those men buried in the sacred plots of French soil. Remembrances of the cheery bright red flowers returned to America with our boys. It became the sign that the high ideals for which these brave young men gave their lives, still live, and are honored. Disabled veterans quickly learned to assemble poppies while growing well again. In Illinois, the American Legion and Auxiliary are united in efforts to help those hospitalized veterans within our state. Each year prior to Memorial Day, millions of Americans wear little red poppies in memory of those who have died in all wars and to assist in the rehabilitation of those veterans who are now hospitalized suffering from wounds and illness. All money taken in is returned to the veterans and their families through our service program. This is the story of our Memorial Poppy, millions of which are distributed by volunteer workers on Poppy Day. Aviston will participate Memorial weekend, May 26, 27 and 28th. Volunteers will be at several business places and at the entrances of church on Sunday. Please remember by wearing a Poppy.

ACIC NEWS: On behalf of the ACIC and Kopff Field Committee I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Kopff Field renovation and dedication. This was truly a community effort! In order to avoid mission anyone, we will avoid mentioning specific names or businesses. We did have close to 250 youth and over 100 adults participate in this project. The local businesses played a huge role in the effort as did our local CYO organization. THANK YOU EVERYONE. Although this project is close to the end, we will still be investing close to $9000.00 dollars for improved lighting on the back diamond. To date, the estimated renovations are close to $57,000.00. RECYCLING: The Village Board has again been considering a recycling program. This has been an ongoing topic for the board and they again thought they would like to get the input of the citizens. I would like to take this opportunity to point out the good and bad of recycling, so here goes: PROS- -recycling protects and expands U S manufacturing jobs and increases U S competitiveness, -recycling reduces the need for land filling and incineration, -recycling prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials, -recycling saves energy, -recycling decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change, -recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals, -recycling helps sustain the environment for future generations. Overall, recycling boosts the economy, conserves natural resources and reduces solid waste. CONS- -the cost of garbage collection would go up approximately $3.00 per household if curb side pick up is chosen, -time consumption, the understanding is that this will take a substantial amount of time to sort, -an extra container either in the house or in the garage for recyclable items. Overall, recycling will take some time to adjust to and will cost a little extra each month. On the July water bill you will notice a note that states---RECYCLING YES OR NO. Please write on the stub to be returned to the village hall yes or no and we will know exactly what you are referring to. This is the only way to know what a majority of the citizens prefer. Please, be sure to respond. Only those who respond will be counted. You can look for an update in the August newsletter. They are as follows: -During the months of March, April and May: The Youth League has the priority over all diamonds for practice until 7:00 p.m. at which time the adults/other leagues may take the field for practice. -All Aviston youth league teams may use the lights at a price of $15 each use. Half of the night games scheduled should be paid before the league starts so you can receive a light key. (or $60 minimum) -All games scheduled on the Aviston Village web page take precedence over any practices after the league starts. -Once games are scheduled in town, they should NOT be moved to the Park Softball diamonds unless all other diamonds are in use. The Park Softball diamond should remain open to allow older teams the availability for make-up games to be scheduled as needed. -The only teams that require the Park Diamonds are the adult/older teams and the Youth League baseball teams from Grade 5 and up. -All usage of the Concession stands should be cleared through the ACIC. There will be a usage fee or whatever the ACIC president agrees to. The workers must be ACIC members only. -To be considered an Aviston youth league team, your roster must consist of a minimum of 51% Aviston residents. Otherwise a fee of $50 for diamond usage and $15 for diamond preparation fees for a total of $65 per game. The Park District would also like to remind all teams that light fees are due.
